Early this year, Kenyans branded 26-year-old Emma Brenda Wanjiru as the “hottest cop” in Kenya after one of her photos went viral.
She became a trending topic for almost a week after that.
Wanjiru even shocked Kenyans further after sharing that she left a sales managerial job in August 2012 and chose to become a police officer.
She joined the Kenyan Institute of Criminal Justice where she graduated with a diploma in Security management Police College in 2014.
“I learnt quite a lot from my dad, and saw the areas I could improve on. I wanted to become a better cop if there’s anything like a better cop. I wanted people to see that a police officer’s job is as respectable as any other,” she said in an interview.
“I felt being a police officer is my calling, and it would get me to the next step. I eventually graduated. Everyone was happy for me.”
Brenda, who auditioned for the 2010 TPF season 4 and got rejected by Judge Ian Mbugua, also opened up about being a young mother and having an abusive boyfriend.
“After completing secondary education, I fell pregnant – my child’s father was my first serious boyfriend,” she said.
“Two months into the pregnancy, he said he wasn’t ready to become a father. I told him: ‘I am 19, so where do we move to from here?’ he said: ‘You can always go back to your mum’s place, I don’t mind.’”
The officer says that she had to walk away because her boyfriend became violent.
“He became verbally abusive, violent, constantly absent… I was traumatised. I had just completed high school. All I had was a KCSE certificate; I wondered where I would go to next. After the people around me knew I was pregnant, they abandoned me – even some members of my family deserted me.”
