Moi University VC protest prove ethnic appointments
– Politicians stormed Moi University after Education CS Fred Matiang’i appointed Laban Ayiroas the acting VC
– Governor Mandago said the appointment of Laban Ayiro was wrong because he is non-Kalenjin
– Several public universities are being headed by VC’s from dominant ethnic tribes where university is located
The move made by two governors and politicians who led residents to storm Moi University protesting the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) has raised eyebrows.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago and Elgeyo Marakwet’s Alex Tolgos led politicians on Tuesday, September 20, demanding the installation of Isaac Kosgey as the VC.
According to them, Kosgey is Kalenjin and deserves the appointment compared to Laban Ayiro who is of a different ethnic tribe.
“We wonder why they have to wait for DP William Ruto to be out of the country to mess up with our university. We will not accept that,” said Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi.
The protests against the appointment because Ayiro is a non-Kalenjin tribesman pointed to other VC appointments in several public universities.
